A congenital heart defect (CHD) results when the heart, or blood vessels near the heart, don’t develop normally before birth.
Hayden's Heart
Hayden was diagnosed with
Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS) — a rare congenital heart defect in which the structures on the right side of the heart are severely underdeveloped or not formed. When these structures do not function properly, the right side of the heart cannot send enough blood to the lungs which causes abnormally low oxygen levels. Treatment for HRHS varies depending on which structures are abnormal. Surgeries are not able to cure HRHS, but provide for a functioning heart. Like Hayden, some children may require a heart transplant because of the severity and/or complexity of their HRHS.
